Sergey Imis

I was born on March 26, 1958 in Perm region. I draw pictures from childhood but began to paint regularly when I was about 40. I am an amateur in the full sense of the word. For the last 15 years I have been a professional interior designer and decorator. I made over 50 projects.

My personality shaped in 1980s. After the army I entered philological department of Perm University. Those were unique times in Russia. The repressive state was getting weaker and weaker, and a great deal of young and well-educated people lived in cultural reflection and communications.

Nobody had money and nobody cared. It was a mighty but sidelined generation. I used to work as a timber loader, an installer, a guard, I wrote poems, plays and prose. In 1990s I had to survive and forgot Art forever, as it seemed. I was engaged in business, advertising, later in design. When it became a little better I suddenly began to paint surrealistic pictures. Now I have a studio where I work and paint what I want.

I think that the biggest period of freedom in painting began with Cézanne and came to an end with Mark Rothko. It was followed by self-dependent units and standalone solid rocks as Francis Bacon.

For me the best poetry in the native language is the greatest achievement of Art. And painting is nothing but poetry, full-scale metaphor in colors. Fortunately, it withstands distortions of translation but loses almost everything in illustrations and, partially, in copying. Painting is artist’s main deed. It is done at one stroke or never, like a good verse.

And if it needs something, that’s a loving look.

Truly yours,
Sergey Imis
